The point about making time to be helpful is right on and one great way to do this is meeting people where there is no clear benefit to me today. I do this all the time. It is a priority in my schedule. Sorry I can’t is to help avoid meetings that are not a priority and where, because they are not a priority, the product that I create sucks due to lack of preparation or rescheduling.
FWIW I have meet 2 of the 3 GPs I wrote about and am actually set to meet the third in a couple weeks. The first one is an amazing person, generous with his time but stingy with his attention. He treats eMail like a twitter feed — not responding to much, but when something catches his attention, he is available, present and genuine. The second is, as to be expected an arrogant asshole. When we finally did meet, he was 10 minutes late to a 30 minute meeting that started with me saying how appreciative I was to meet him, how much I was looking forward to learning from him and a genuine “thank you for making time.” that was met with a stare practiced to intimidate, a crossing of the legs, folding of the hands in a tent in front of his face all wrapped in an impenetrable, “You’re welcome…” I should have got up and left.
I’ll let you know how the third one goes, but I am looking forward to it in a big way.
